Google will soon change how you’ll authenticate your Gmail account. Instead of the familiar SMS security code, Google is moving to a more secure method.
Moving From SMS to QR Codes for Gmail Authentication
First reported by Forbes, Google is planning to shift away from SMS to QR codes. The major reason for the decision SMS abuse by hackers.
Gmail spokesperson Ross Richendrfer explained to Forbes what will happen soon:
“Over the next few months, we will be reimagining how we verify phone numbers. Specifically, instead of entering your number and receiving a 6-digit code, you’ll see a QR code being displayed, which you need to scan with the camera app on your phone.”
SMS codes are a popular way to provide two-factor authentication, but attackers have continued to find ways to abuse the feature.
There are a number of ways that SMS can be attacked. One is called a SIM swap, where attackers trick your mobile phone provider into transferring your number to a new SIM card, allowing them to intercept messages, including security codes. Hackers have also been able to intercept SMS messages in transit.
A More Secure Gmail
Google says moving over to QR codes for authentication provides a major advantage. By removing SMS codes for authentication, there is nothing for hackers to steal using phishing techniques.
As a long-time Gmail user, I’m happy to see Google implement such a big change. Hopefully it will arrive soon. Google indicates that you will still be able to use more secure authenticator apps.
Along with changing authentication methods, Google and many other sites and services have made the move away from passwords to passkeys. Passkeys fix the drawbacks of passwords and make the entire login process much easier.
